Top 3 Tastiest Fish in Dubai

30th Mar 2023

Positioned parallel to 72 kilometers of shoreline, the Emirate of Dubai has always been and continues to be a popular fishing destination. Ever since the early days of the Emirate, locals and residents have heavily relied on fishing as a source of inexpensive, healthy, and nutrient-rich food.

1. Cobia

Topping the list of the top 3 tastiest fish in the UAE are Cobias! Cobia is the tastiest and most delicious fish in Dubai. A fresh Cobia makes an excellent fresh meal for various reasons, as follows:

  • Compared to other tasty and delicious fish in Dubai, Cobia is relatively cheap to buy from local fish markets. In fact, 1 KG of Cobia costs only AED 15 - 20 on average.
  • Cobias are large fish, and hence, not as bony as many other tasty and delicious fish in Dubai. This makes them a perfect choice of safe nutrients and protein for children!
  • While this is not the case for all local fish markets in Dubai, fresh Cobias are almost always available for sale, especially at the Dubai Waterfront Market! However, it is not common to find Cobia in supermarkets or groceries in the UAE.
  • Cobias are rich in healthy fats, especially the infamous omega-3 fatty acids.

Cobia is preferably served fried or oven-cooked. If you plan to fry Cobia, cut the fish into slices that are two fingers wide.

2. Orange-spotted Grouper

Our next favorite on the list of most delicious fish in the UAE is the Orange-spotted Grouper. Orange-spotted Groupers make tough competitors against Cobias for the tastiest fish in Dubai, for the reasons provided below:

  • Groupers can often be found in different sizes, from small to big. However, it is noteworthy that bigger Orange-spotted Groupers tend to be tastier than smaller ones.
  • Grouper flesh is characterized by its softness and smooth texture.
  • Fresh Groupers are often readily available in virtually all fish markets in Dubai, including fish stalls in supermarkets.
  • Generally, Groupers are low in fat and cholesterol, making them an excellent choice of healthy white protein.

In despite of the above, we note that the Orange-spotted Grouper is quite expensive in Dubai. The average price per KG for Orange-spotted Groupers in the UAE is AED 40-50.

The Orange-spotted Grouper is served fried, or preferably oven-cooked. If you plan to fry Groupers, cut the fish into slices that are two fingers wide.

3. Trevallies

For the purposes of this list, “Trevallies” refer to the Golden Trevally and the Orange-spotted Trevally. Trevallies are amongst the tastiest saltwater fish and are viewed as a local delicacy in Dubai. Some of the reasons Trevallies are so popular for eating are:

  • Trevallies are smooth and have no scales, which makes them easy to clean and gut before cooking.
  • Despite their relatively small size, Trevallies are not as bony as other fish of similar size (such as Emperor Fish), making them safe to eat for adults and children alike.
  • As stated above, Trevallies come in relatively small sizes. Hence, it is easier to purchase just the right quantity. In fact, smaller Trevallies are tastier than bigger ones, and we would definitely recommend smaller Trevallies for eating. The flesh of bigger Trevallies is often too tough and chewy, making them a bad choice for a tasty fresh meal.
  • Trevallies are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and even vitamins. This makes Trevallies a very healthy option, especially when fresh!

Unfortunately, the price of Trevallies in Dubai can be quite high. For example, the price of Golden Trevallies in Dubai ranges from AED 45 - 85 per KG for Golden Trevallies.

While Orange-spotted Trevallies are often available in fish markets in Dubai, the same cannot be said about Golden Trevallies, which are uncommon in fish markets in Dubai, especially the smaller sizes.

The best way to cook Trevallies is to fry them. However, grilling is also a great option!
