Names

Scientific name: Carangoides bajad

Internationally, it is referred to as the Orange-spotted Trevally or the Gold-spotted Trevally. In the UAE, it is known as Nuaimya / Um Al Hala (نعيمية / أم الحلا).

Shape and color

The Orange-spotted Trevally has an elongated compressed body, that is brassy-silver in color with orange or yellowish dots covering its whole body.




Habitat

They are commonly found swimming near the surface in shallow coastal waters and are commonly found in schools.




Feeding

They are known for predatory behavior and feed on many marine species including small fish, nekton, crustaceans, and some others. 




Fishing season

It is a common fish in the waters of the UAE and can be encountered throughout the year. It is, however, more abundant during the period from early to August to the end of September.




Fishing method

It can be caught using various fishing techniques including gillnetting and fishing rods.

  • The Orange-spotted trevally has a local reputation of being good and tasty to eat.
  • It is commonly used as live bait for luring bigger fish, especially since it can remain alive for a longer-than-average period of time.
  • The Arabic name of Um Al Hala (أم الحلا) translates to “The Rusty One” since the yellow/orange spots on its brassy-silver body looks like spots of rust on a metal.




Minimum legal length: 25 centimeters.
