Four Types of Emperor Fish in the UAE

19th Dec 2022

For nearly every Dubai fishing trip we have conducted, we have caught one or more emperor fish. If you are going for a deep-sea fishing tour in Dubai, you are more than 95% likely to encounter one of four types of emperor fish.

The four different types of emperor fish in Dubai are:

In this blog, we showcase the four different types of emperor fish (with photos) and a brief comparative description.

1. Spangled Emperor (شعري)

Among the four emperor fish present in Dubai’s waters, the spangled emperor is the most popular. The spangled emperor is also considered the most expensive of the four, and the tastiest as well!

In comparison to the three other species of emperor fish, the spangled emperor is unique in having blue marks around the face and sometimes on the body as well.

The spangled emperor is often caught when deep sea fishing around smoother sea beds (i.e., non-rocky sea beds).

2. Pink-eared Emperor (شخيلي)

The next in line in terms of popularity, taste, and market value is the pink-eared emperor.

In comparison to the three other species of emperor fish, the spangled emperor is unique in having a bright red line around the margin of its gill covers (hence the naming “Pink-eared”).

Similar to the spangled emperor, the pink-eared emperor is often caught when deep sea fishing around smoother sea beds (i.e., non-rocky sea beds).

3. Smalltooth Emperor (سولي)

After the pink-eared emperor comes the less-popular smalltooth emperor, ranking third on the list.

In comparison to the three other species of emperor fish, the smalltooth emperor is unique in having a relatively elongated body, and usually does not grow as big as the spangled emperor or the pink-eared emperor.

4. Snubnose Emperor (يماه)

At the bottom of the list comes the least-popular snubnose emperor, ranking fourth in terms of popularity, taste, and market value.

In comparison to the three other species of emperor fish, the snubnose emperor is easy to identify in the sense that it has none of the unique features of the other three species of emperor fish. However, two unique features of the snubnose emperor include:

  • Sharp set of teeth, capable of cutting light fishing lines; and
  • Relatively small maximum size.

Unlike to the spangled emperor and pink-eared emperor, the snubnose emperor is often caught when deep sea fishing around rougher sea beds (i.e., rocky sea beds).
