Amberjack shape and color
The Greater Amberjack has an elongated, oval, compressed, and compact body. As the name suggests, the Greater Amberjack has a unique, amber-colored body. In detail, their top appears brownish or olive greenish, with its belly leaning towards silver white. They also commonly have a black line extending towards the top from the eyes.
Amberjack habitat
In Dubai and the UAE in general, Greater Amberjacks are only found far offshore in deep waters, typically around coral reefs and shipwrecks, and are typically encountered swimming in small to medium sized schools. Hence, fresh Greater Amberjacks are not common in the UAE fish markets.
Amberjack feeding
Greater Amberjacks are known for predatory behavior and feed on many marine species including squid, cuttlefish, crabs, and other small fish. Greater Amberjacks are also fed on by various species, such as Sharks and Large Tunas.
Amberjack fishing season
In specific and designated fishing spots, Greater Amberjacks can be caught in the UAE on Dubai fishing trips almost all year, and do not seem to have a specific season. However, while Greater Amberjacks can be caught while fishing in Dubai year-round, be sure to go when the time is right for fishing in Dubai.
Amberjack fishing method
Fishing for Greater Amberjacks in Dubai is mainly done through jigging and live-bait fishing (be sure to get an idea about catching live bait first), both of which must be conducted near the seafloor. There are some reported instances where Greater Amberjacks have been caught while fishing in Dubai using trolling or casting as well.

- Greater Amberjack fishing in Dubai is not a common Dubai fishing activity due to the far locations and required experience level for catching them.
- Fishing for Greater Amberjacks in Dubai is challenging and fun, as they fight so hard when hooked, hence the name “Reef Donkey”!
- Larger variations of the Greater Amberjack may rarely contain worms, particularly in the flesh near the tail. Such Amberjacks are still edible, and the worms (known as Spaghetti worms) are harmless to humans, but it is recommended to discard the parts infested with worms.
