UAE Fishing Ban During February 2023

30th Jan 2023

“Our vision is clear in terms of establishing sustainability's pillars as a key component of our development journey, which is part of the national agenda. We are committed to sustainability, which is a top priority that we strive to implement taking into consideration environment conservation, and balance between economic and social development”.

- H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister of the UAE

Fishing in the UAE is a highly regulated activity, governed by strict laws, rules, and procedures. Such regulations stem from the UAE’s keenness to adopt environmentally friendly and sustainable practices to preserve the marine waters off the coast of the state.

As part of the UAE’s efforts in facilitating the reproduction of the different species of fish inhabiting the coastal waters of the UAE, the UAE’s Minister of Climate Change and Environment then issued Ministerial Decision No. 1 of 2021 on the Regulation of Fishing and Marketing Some Species of Fish During Breeding Season (hereinafter “Ministerial Decision”).

According to the Ministerial Decision, fishing in the UAE for the Goldlined Seabream (Rhabdosargus sarba) and King Soldier Bream (Argyrops spinifer) is banned through the period from 1 – 28 February, for the years 2021 – 2023.

As a result, fishing in Dubai and the UAE for Goldlined Seabreams (Rhabdosargus sarba) and King Soldier Breams (Argyrops spinifer) during the abovementioned period is punishable by law. On a concurrent reading of Articles 24 and 52 of Federal Law No. 23 of 1999 on the Exploitation, Protection and Development of Living Water Resources in the UAE, and its amendments, fishing for Goldlined Seabreams (Rhabdosargus sarba) and King Soldier Breams (Argyrops spinifer) during February 2023 is punishable by imprisonment for a period of not less than three months,  and/or a monetary fine of AED 25,000 – AED 50,000.

It is important to consider the above whenever fishing in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or other Emirates of the UAE, not only to avoid committing illegal acts but to further contribute to the flourishment of the marine environment in the UAE. The environment is the responsibility of every one of us
