Two bar Seabream

Names

Scientific name: Acanthopagrus bifasciatus

Internationally, it is referred to as the Twobar Seabream. Other common names include Two-banded Seabream, Twobar Porgy, and Black-banded Bream. In the UAE, it is known as Faskar (فسكر) and Bint Al Nokhitha (بنت النوخذة).

Shape and color

The Twobar Seabream has an asymmetrical body with a curvy back and a semi-flat belly, almost round in shape, that is shiny silver in color with two black vertical bands near the face and yellow pectoral, dorsal, and caudal fins.




Habitat

They are commonly found swimming near the bottom and around rocky areas, as they live in caves and are found in schools.




Feeding

They are found grazing for prey on rocky surfaces and feed on many marine species including mollusks, crustaceans, some species of soft coral, and many others. 




Fishing season

They are not commonly encountered by fishermen in the waters of the UAE; however, they may be encountered throughout the year. Generally, they seem to prefer the winter months of December up to April and are not as common during the remainder of the year.




Fishing method

It can be caught using various fishing techniques including fishing nets, fishing rods, and fish traps (locally known as Gargoor).




Fun facts


  • The Arabic name of Bint Al Nokhitha (بنت النوخذة) is a literal translation of “The Daughter of the Ship’s Captain”, and it has been named accordingly due to its beauty that widened they eyes of unsuspecting fishermen.
  • It has a high market value and is known as a delicacy that is rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids.




Minimum legal length: 27 centimeters.

Fishing status: Not banned.
