Names

Scientific name: Euthynnus affinis

Internationally, it is referred to as Bonito. Other common names include Jack Mackerel, Kawa Kawa, Little Tuna, Little Tunny. In the UAE, it is known as Tebban (تبّان).

Shape and color

Mackerel Tuna has a blue-silver body color, and a dark blue back with a complicated striped pattern that does not extend forward, and has a silvery-white belly and lower sides, and may have several dark spots between its pelvic and pectoral fins.




Habitat

They are commonly found swimming around the coastal waters and offshores, and are usually found in schools of the same size and family.




Feeding

Mackerel Tuna feed on many marine species including small fish, crustaceans, shrimps, pilchards, blue sprats, herrings, cephalopods, and many others. They are often targeted by marlins and sharks.




Fishing season

They are common fish in the waters of the UAE and can be encountered throughout the year. They do, however, prefer Winter months and are not as common during Summer months.




Fishing method

They can be caught using various fishing techniques, including fishing rods (usually by casting lures) and fishing nets (locally known as Al Hayyali).

  • They are called Mackerel Tuna because they are very common on Mackerel grounds, where they are a constant nuisance to professional Mackerel trolling boats.
  • Mackerel Tuna is a strong fighter that fight hard when hooked. 
  • Mackerel Tuna is a fast-swimming fish.
