Fish Species You Can’t Catch in Dubai’s Waters

13th May 2023

Recently, many fishing charters in Dubai have been promoting their Dubai fishing trips in a misleading way in the hopes of securing higher profits. Amongst such misleading tactics is promoting fishing trips targeting fish species that do not exist in the waters of the Emirate. In this blog, we highlight some fish species that are impossible or extremely unlikely to catch while fishing in Dubai.

List of fish species you can’t catch in Dubai’s waters:

  1. Marlin fish and their sub-species: All types of Marlin fish, including the infamous Sailfish, cannot be caught while fishing in Dubai. While Marlins and Sailfish have previously been encountered by Dubai fishermen, they can no longer be found in Dubai today except on extremely rare occasions. While many claim the reason for such disappearance is the increasing construction work in the territorial sea of Dubai, this has not been confirmed. Over the past years, despite conducting hundreds of fishing trips in Dubai year-round, we have only encountered one Marlin fish in the waters of Dubai.
  2. Swordfish: As is the case with the similar-looking Marlin fish, Swordfish cannot be caught while fishing in Dubai and are not found in the waters of the Emirate.
  3. Salmon: Salmon fish are commonly sold in Dubai and can be found in virtually all fish markets in the Emirate, including supermarkets and hypermarkets. However, Salmons are not native species in Dubai and cannot be caught during offshore fishing trips in Dubai. Salmons sold in Dubai’s fish markets are either imported or farmed locally.
  4. Freshwater fish: Freshwater fish such as Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, and others, cannot be caught while fishing in Dubai. This is because Dubai has an extremely hot climate with very little rain throughout the year, making it nearly impossible for natural freshwater lakes to form and thrive. However, fishing may be allowed in some manmade freshwater lakes in Dubai, such as in the DAMAC Fishing Lake.
