Shape and color

The Barracuda has a snake-like long and round body, that is dark or grey in color with a shiny silver belly and a dark horizontal line running the length of the body, and often has a distinguishable face with sharp teeth.

It has small scales and no sharp spikes, which allows for easy handling of the fish as long as care is taken to avoid the mouth.

Habitat

They are commonly found swimming around wrecks or rocky reefs at various depths. Juveniles are commonly found swimming in schools, unlike their older counterparts.

Feeding

They are known for their aggressive and opportunistic predatory behavior, relying on speed and surprise in attacking their prey. They feed on many fish including groupers, anchovies, jacks, snappers, mullets, and many others.

They are often used as live bait during live trolling for big kingfish.

Fishing season

It is a common fish in the waters of the UAE and can be encountered throughout the year. They do, however, prefer winter months and are not as common during the summer months of May, June, July, and August.

Fishing method

It can be caught using various fishing techniques including fishing nets, and fishing rods. It is preferred to use thick lines or wires to prevent their sharp teeth from cutting fishing lines.

Fun facts

  • Barracudas are aggressive and strong fighters when they are first hooked, but tire out quickly.
  • They are despised by many fishermen for their sharp teeth that often cut fishing lines.
  • They scare away other more sought-after fish when they are in the area, hence, many fishermen prefer to leave an area where Barracudas are encountered.
  • They are not safe to eat in many countries around the world but are safe to eat in the UAE, especially when they’re below 3.5 feet. For eating, it is preferred to cut them into round slices and fry them.
