Confused as to whether you should choose a barbed or a barbless hook for your next fishing trip? This blog is written to help you make the choice!

What is the difference between barbed and barbless hooks?

The difference between barbed hooks and barbless hooks is simply the barb. According to Merriam-Webster, a barb is “a sharp projection extending backward (as from the point of an arrow or fishhook) and preventing easy extraction”. In the context of fishing, the barb is a small sharp metallic shape found near the sharp end of a fishing hook with a reversed figure.

Are barbed hooks better than barbless hooks?

Well, the answer is, it depends. When comparing barbed hooks to barbless hooks, it is difficult to determine which fishing hook is the best, as such determination is based on many factors that may differ from one individual to another.

Below are a few key differences between barbed and barbless fishing hooks:

  • Catch Rate - Barbed fishing hooks are more likely to land a catch compared to barbless fishing hooks, as the barb helps keep the fish hooked. However, it is important to note that while barbed hooks are more effective at catching fish than barbless hooks, the difference in the catch rate is not as significant as one may think, especially when it comes to professional anglers.
  • Injuries - Barbless fishing hooks are less likely to cause serious injuries to humans. It is common among recreational fishermen to get injured with a fishing hook every now and then. If such injury is caused by deep penetration of a fishing hook, the injured person would be delighted to know that the hook is barbless, as barbless hooks are easy to remove, usually not requiring any medical intervention. On the other hand, barbed fishing hooks that penetrate flesh beyond the barb, are extremely difficult to move without causing significant pain and injury, and usually require seeking medical assistance.
  • Fishing Purpose - Barbed hooks are more effective when it comes to fishing trips where you wish to catch fish for a fresh tasty meal, as they score higher catch rates. Barbless hooks are more common for catch-and-release fishing, as they result in minimal injuries and disturbance to the hooked fish.
  • Location - Depending on your location, you are likely to notice that one type of fishing hook is more common than the other. For example, barbed fishing hooks are significantly more common than barbless fishing hooks in Dubai.
